Abstract: Malibu is the perfect combination of laid-back beach living and extreme luxury, and if there's one home that captures that unique spirit, it's the Wave House. This prestigious home has just hit the market for the first time in 36 years.

Located on the California coast, the Wave House is designed to resemble a giant wave at its peak.

"The property is an iconic Malibu masterpiece that is admired and envied by the community and architecture enthusiasts alike," said Dena Luciano, who is the listing agent for the home with Douglas Elliman, along with Chris Cortazzo and Zen Gesner of Compass, and Carolwood Estates' Drew Fenton.

The home is priced at $49.5 million, which matches the size of the home.

The waterfront enclave is iconic in its own right. Leonardo DiCaprio and Lady Gaga both call it home. Miley Cyrus, Don Henley, Joni Mitchell and Courtney Love have all written hit songs about this paradisiacal place - just 30 miles from Los Angeles, but a world away.

The Wave House was designed in the 1950s by architect Harry Gesner, who shot to fame by using his surfboard to create masterpieces. As the story goes, Gesner would gather inspiration for his designs after surfing near his own California home.

In fact, Gesner's 1970s home, known as "The Sandcastle," was also on the market - next door, in fact! Gesner designed it for his friend!

Gesner designed the house in the 1950s for his friend and fellow surfer Gerry Cooper, and subsequent owners have been music royalty: Rod Stewart in the 1970s and, more recently, Mo Ostin, the recording genius behind the success of The Wonders and Jimi Hendrix.

The six-bedroom, eight-bathroom home sits on 0.7 acres across pristine white sand, just steps from the roaring Pacific Ocean.

Built in 1963, the 6,451-square-foot home has been praised as a mid-century modern masterpiece. Its interior design showcases an abundance of California sunshine.

"As soon as you walk in, the home takes your breath away," Luciano says." It is awe-inspiring and evokes a sense of relaxation at the same time. The striking architecture combined with the natural beauty of the surrounding area creates a truly remarkable experience for those who have the opportunity to explore the property."

The residence has two distinct floors. On the lower level, right on the beach, there are three huge vaulted rooms and a main suite with a hot tub and sauna. On the upper level, there are five bedrooms spread across the entire width of the property, offering amazing views of the surf.

A recessed conversation pit swirls around a central fireplace. The hand-cut copper tiles on the roof resemble the scales of a fish, glistening in the air as if it were tossing and jumping over the water.

The Wave House displays Gesner's unique attention to architectural elements, including wood-paneled ceilings, gleaming hardwood floors and floor-to-ceiling glass walls.

A landscaped patio is particularly inviting, and a detached garage and guesthouse provide additional bedrooms and private space for visitors. The residence was clearly built with hospitality and entertaining in mind.

One of the home's most unique features is a series of overlapping circles that serve as wraparound decks. This shape reflects the surf and provides great space for outdoor living.

"With its unique design and captivating ambiance, the Wave House is a testament to architect Harry Gesner's artistic vision and its enduring appeal in the real estate market," Luciano said.
