Abstract: The most expensive home ever built in South Carolina now has a new title!

Just a few months ago, we hailed a 16,000-square-foot estate as the most expensive home in the state.Circle Creek Farm is still on the market for $22 million.

But now the six-bedroom brick beauty on 4,409 acres in Yemassee, S.C., takes the top spot with a whopping $39,500,000.

"The house is what we call a post-Civil War plantation home," said listing agent Charles G. Lane, a broker with Holcombe, Fair & Lane.

The house is located on Gregorie Neck Road on a 4,409-acre peninsula bordering the Coosawhatchie and Tulifiny rivers.

"The house feels perfect with its north-south orientation and ocean breezes," Lane said." All bedrooms are en suite with stunning views."

The estate boasts over eight miles of water and marshland with a fishing pond and impeccable landscaping.

"The oaks in the yard date back to Columbian times," says Lane." This is an elevated piece of land on the Lowcountry bluffs. It has deep-water docks. There's a lot to do on this land. There are turkeys, deer, and saltwater fishing for shrimp and crabs. This place has it all. This is a unique and inviting property."

The 6,000-square-foot brick mansion has been updated over the years with special attention to preserving its history. Highlights from that time include 9-foot ceilings, preserved hardwood floors, multiple fireplaces, exposed wood-beam ceilings and multiple built-in cabinets.

"The kitchen has been modernized and everything in the home has been tastefully redone," says Lane.

In addition to the main residence, the current owners built a game house with a great room with vaulted exposed-beam ceilings, a stone fireplace, full kitchen, gun room and library.

"The game house can be used as a second home, and the garage can be converted into a guest house," Lane says.

And there's more: The property also boasts two caretaker's houses, a heated garage for 16 cars, an eight-stall horse barn and 15 acres of fenced pasture.

"I don't know of any other property," says Lane, "that has such a large acreage of cultivated land with no restrictions on what you can use it for." I think the next buyer will be looking for a one-of-a-kind property, a nature lover, possibly a hunter. They want absolute privacy and security.
